For our 2012 Exhibition, we did our project about social injustice in Humanities, waves in Physics, and graphing symbols in Math. Exhibition is the biggest project of the year where we transform our classrooms to revolve around what we were learning about. Guests from the community, including of families, friends, and neighbors, and go throughout the school to learn about our projects. We turned the main commons into an urban city street and had a stage where we did a performance; most were playing instruments in a group. My group had 3 peers performing a spoken word while I did a speed painting. This was to show the audience social injustice though words, and a painting that I believe represented it well.
In Humanities we chose a social injustice topic around the world and did research on it. Below is my annotated bibliography to show the sources I used for research and what I learned from them. We learn who the problem affected, what was causing it, how it was affecting them, and looked into ways it could be solved. My topic was Chinese oppression on Tibet and how they lack many freedoms because of the Chinese. We also learned about street art and how, while most is illegal, they can carry important messages and ideas, and how this is possible through man means of art. We looked into the history of hip hop music to see where it came from and how it had social messages in it, but many artists today are using it just for bragging rights. We also learned about spoken word and poetry and how to try to make someone else feel the emotion we are feeling through poetry and how we say it. Below is my spoken word on Tibet for an example of the poetry aspect. In Physics we learned about waves (like light and sound waves) and created an instrument for our performance. We then wrote an essay about sound waves and did labs on light waves and color to help us understand the science better. In Math we created a symbol to represent our topic and graphed it, then created an object with our symbol on it to place somewhere in the room on exhibition.
In this project I enjoyed creating the art aspects the most because I really enjoy art, so I really enjoyed being able to make a stencil and print and the process of figuring out an image to create. But the most challenging part for me was writing the physics essay because that is the subject I struggle with the most and it took me a while to understand waves. If I had to opportunity to change anything about how exhibition went, I wouldn't have scrapped the idea of hanging the backdrop from the ceiling because I ended up painting the mural at home because my group and I were taking longer than expected to make a frame for it, and we ended up hanging it from the ceiling for exhibition.
I am most proud of my stencil because it is very detailed and I believe that it communicates my message well. It is of the Dalai Lama (a Buddhist religious leader in Tibet) with a gag around his mouth and the words "Return Tibet's Voice." During exhibition, I enjoyed talking to people between performances because it was really cool to see how interested people were in our project and they were obviously very impressed that freshmen created it all and learned so much. If i could change anything about the set up of exhibition, I probably would have tried to see if there was a better way to organize backstage so it was easier to access our instruments and get on and off stage. One struggle during exhibition was getting on and off stage because we were all a little nervous and antsy about performing.
