I think that I did very well on this exhibition and I am proud of my work. I had a hard time getting the paint the right color, so if I had to re-do one thing I would have spent longer on his hair. But I am proud of my work overall because I put lots of time and effort into it.
Artist Statement:
Vincent van Gogh was a highly influential artist from France. He struggled with mental illness his entire life, but still captured nearly the entire spectrum of human emotion in his works. He is most famous for his landscapes and self portraits as well as his signature style of brush stroke. These dive into the ages old scientific sketches of the world around us that date back to the beginnings of mankind. I chose to recreate his Self-Portrait with Dark Felt Hat with half of his face a skull to exemplify how some of his works show studies of human anatomy. I used the original color pallet in my painting and tried to keep it as close to the original as possible (aside from the skull) to show how his original work ties into scientific studies. The science of how pigments form paint is an art itself and the art of how light strikes objects and how our eyes perceive the colors around us is a science itself.
